Der Sandthymian (Thymus serpyllum) eignet sich hervorragend als Bodendecker auf kargen, sandigen Böden. Der Standort sollte vollsonnig bis halbschattig sein. Der Boden möglichst nährstoffarm. Kalkhaltige Böden mag der Sandthymian jedoch nicht. Die robusten Pflanzen werden ca. 10 cm hoch und bilden von Juni – September kleine, rosa Blüten, die herrlich duften. Sie Blüten werden gerne von Bienen besucht. Aussaat direkt ins Freiland: im April / Mai. Da es sich um Lichtkeimer handelt, die Samen möglichst nur andrücken. Die Keimung setzt bei etwa 20° C ein. Um die Pflanzen zu dichterem Wachstum zu erziehen, können diese im zeitigen Frühjahr radikal zurückgeschnitten werden. Der Pflanzenteppich ist bedingt begehbar.
